The brief
Writing in Architecture Now, Amir and Ali Ghaffarian Hoseini presented work from AUT's final-year Architectural Engineering studio, where students designed mixed-use community blocks for a site in central Auckland and were free to interpret co-living and co-working in their own way.
Why it matters
With housing affordability, rising rents and remote work reshaping how people live, the article argued that well-designed shared spaces can offer connection and lower costs while keeping private space, and that the pandemic made the balance between communal and personal space more important.
The challenge to designers
The authors urged architects to put user needs and changing lifestyles at the centre of the design process, with flexible, adaptable buildings that can support smart cities.
